The Council of Motor Club’s annual celebration of Sydney’s motoring community, the Shannons Sydney Classic, was held at Sydney Motorsport Park on Sunday the 18th of August. HGNA NSW set up a display to promote the club and run our usual raffle.

This year the weather gods were more than kind to us, providing relatively warm conditions from early morning continuing throughout the day.

Our Group N display was well supported with a number of members’ cars on display to the general public. Those members were:

  • Elizabeth Wilks, Holden Torana

  • Steve and Andrew Taite, Chevrolet Nova

  • Steve Pitman, EH Holden

  • John and Paul Battersby, Group C Mini Cooper

  • Ian Johnson, Chevrolet Corvair

  • David Roberts, Ferrari. It was rumored Dave is getting some red paint and a roller for Christmas.

Historic Group N members had a very enjoyable and successful day. Members shared the roster to sell raffle tickets and caps at both ends of the garages. I was surprised to hear that they were offering my racecar as the prize. I was further dismayed when I heard several people say they did not want it..

We were able to sell all the allotted raffle tickets. The raffle was won by Trevor Boyle from Cronulla who was pleasantly surprised with his win.

As usual the varied selection of vehicles on display was enormous, making the day a must to attend on the annual calendar.

The day was completed with a brisk three-lap sprint, which was a fitting climax to a most enjoyable and relaxing day. I viewed the on track footage of a certain passenger in a Mini Cooper displaying some white-knuckle fever almost crushing the roll cage tube – at one stage presumably looking under the seat for a life jacket and eventually recovering, excited to have had the on track experience.
