After completing a twelve year stint in the navy, which included the Vietnam period, I enrolled for teacher training at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music and completed a four year degree in music education. On completion of this degree, a further two years of jazz studies at the Conservatorium with Don Burrows followed. Throughout this time I maintained an a interest in motor racing, but arranging financing was a challenge.
After completing my jazz studies, I spent several years working as a professional musician doing shows, TV and clubs. For some years, I played with the Daly Wilson Big Band and the Warren Daly Big Band.
During this period I discovered go karting – an interest I would maintain for several years. One day, while at a race meeting at Oran Park, I encountered an Appendix J Association demonstration event. This piqued my interest in touring car racing, and soon after I was encouraged to join the Appendix J Association by a friend.
I joined the historic touring car category in 1984. My first car was a 1964 Ford Fairlane.
About this time I took a full time teaching position, which I focused on for the next 34 years while juggling music performances, race car preparation and the odd car restoration.
My Fairlane was followed by a 1965 Mustang, after a few years of which the thought of a 1964 Chevy Nova SS caught my imagination. As the category moved on, a 1972 HQ 308 Holden 4 door became the car of interest.
Another fascination came soon after in the form of a 1966 Chevy Nova SS, which brings us to the present. Who knows what the future might bring? It might be something completely different.
I built all of these cars in what spare time I had and am happy to say that all of them are still log booked.
